Blog entry: 6 - Socialization

Socialization- is the process through which people learn their culture's basic norms, values, beliefs, and appropriate behaviors.
When reading chapter 6 and watching the videos and reading I started to feel more connected to this chapter then any before. This chapter deals with the socialization on how we operate with the social world. From when we are children we are shaped by family beliefs and social ideals. While growing up we change taken on new roles that is achieved status, student, employee, spouse, retiree. These different achievements are influenced by the society we choice to live in. Every one on the earth doesn't have the same values that other choice to but its then that when people become individuals we gain a sense of self by what we interact with inside of the society we live in.

The video "A call for Men, a video conference led by Tony Porter" that explain the "Man Box" This man box are the ways in witch men are expected to act. Social norms that are passed down in parenting. How men shouldn't cry to how men are the protectors in the family. But the most important role of all is to never act like a girl this show weakness. Agents of socialization plays a role in the thinking of how these beliefs come to place. "Family" as stated in chapter 6 is the "primary agent of early socialization." In the family young men learn from their fathers.
This video related back to the article "Parents Socialization of Children" since not all cultures base man to act in these norms. Different parenting technique is practice such as Authoritative, Permissive, Authoritarian, and parenting. These are different ways kids are raised around the world and though their society norms that is practice. As for the video "Killing Us Softy" is how woman are viewed in society. It is a very moving video on how woman are advertised through marketing, media, and ideals. While watching this video as a male I was being reminded the every witch way how society appropriate behavior effects woman. From the way they are judged about their appearance to their role in the family was being influenced on woman since childhood.

Power Blog entry#5

                                                        "The Milgram Experiment"

-This experiment was to test how people obedience to authority. Their was a professor that is seen as the authority. Then the teacher who also has legitimate power. Then the victim who is seen as the one receiving electric shocks. The goal was to see if random people had the power to say enough is enough and stop the experiment. then again the majority compliance establish power for the professor to control the experiment. Chapter 5 is express through this experiment for the following reasons:

1-Legitimate power- All teachers voluntarily accepted to be apart of the experiment. Thus giving them             the power to walk away or call a quite when they feel fit.

2-Expert power- Believing that the professor knows best since it will be seen as his field of expertise. He has power because he has superior knowledge about the power of each shock and how it will not be long term damage.

3-Power tactics- The professor used Manipulation, he would simple tell the teachers that they most continue the experiment. When they would ask if this may damage them he repeats no long damage will be held. He was able to have the teacher continue with out force.

4-Rational-legal authority- This to me is why the professor was seen right. People who hold the rank as professor, laser, doctor, has to be accepted by others. They are hard positions to gain so if some one does have it its because of knowledge.

5-Compliance- This has to be the main reason of power. The teacher go along with the experiment with hearing the victim saying "stop it, stop it, get me out of here i had enough" and keeps going. Plus when it went silence and the shock was given because of lack of no answer. If their was no compliance from the teacher and their have been no experiment.

-This experiment was very interesting to me. Learning how their is different ways power can be used. How obedience was so easily gained with out much action. Their is different factors that played in to this experiment but to me the biggest lesson learned is when to say No. Its is still hard to believe 9/12 teachers went all the way through with the experiment.

"Five faces of Oppression"by Iris young

-Oppression being one of the traditional forms of power. Chapter 5 explains the way power is used in society. Oppression is the exercise of authority or power in a burdensome, cruel, or unjust manner. Oppression can be found all through history."according to Iris Marian Young there are Five faces of oppression":

1- Exploitation- is the act of using people labor to produce profit while not compensating them fairly. African american was subject to this when they were slaves and didn't get payed or treated they way they should have through out their work.

2-Marginalization- is the act of relegating or confining a group of people to lower social standing or out limit or edge of society. this is just restricting people based on who is fit to live in society and who isn't. when we lock people up we are doing this we are telling them they are not able to live with society and keep them away from the communities.

3-Powerlessness- Some people "have" power while others "have-not".this goes two ways people can be powerless by having no power being poor. Then people can be powerless because they don't know or have the resource to make a difference.

4-Cultural Imperialism- involves taking the culture of ruling class and establishing it as the norm. Recently the Gay marriage is becoming something that was once never to be a norm to becoming a reglar. It was norm that men and woman are the ones that get married.

5-Voilence- is probably the most obvious and visible form oppression. Its simple force the power to control through fear. it control that been around since the begging of time.

-This article gives a great look at oppression and to understand the levels of it. Chapter 5 is Power and to me oppression and power goes hand and hand. It shouldn't be used in my option because their are long side affects. People are miss treated because the dominant group sees fit.
